Hizbut Tahrir: Prohibited organization, strict warning from police

The Bangladesh Police Headquarters has reaffirmed Hizb ut Tahrir as a banned organization. According to the law, all activities of the organization will be considered punishable offenses. Police Headquarters AIG (Media and PR) Inamul Haque Sagar gave this information on Friday (March 7).

Hizbut Tahrir Planned rally in Baitul Mukarram

Today, Friday (March 7), some members of Hizbut Tahrir planned to organize a rally called ‘March for Khilafa’ in the Baitul Mukarram Mosque area. They have called on supporters to gather in the area to make the event successful.

Deputy Police Commissioner (DC) of the Media and Public Relations Department of DMP, Muhammad Talebur Rahman, said on Thursday (March 6) that legal action will be taken if any banned organization, including Hizb ut Tahrir, holds a meeting.

Banned Hizbut Tahrir organization in 2009

Hizbut Tahrir is a banned organization under the laws of Bangladesh. The organization was banned by the Bangladesh government on October 22, 2009, considering it a threat to public security. According to the Anti-Terrorism Act-2009, any meeting, rally, procession, distribution of posters-leaflets and other means of propaganda by any banned organization is a punishable offense.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has made it clear that if Hizbut Tahrir or any other banned organization conducts a meeting, rally or propaganda activities, strict action will be taken against them.

Three members of Hizbut Tahrir arrested in Uttara

The Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of the DMP has arrested three active members of Hizbut Tahrir from the area adjacent to Uttara West Police Station in the capital. It was reported that the organization was secretly planning to organize a rally called ‘March for Khilafa’ in the Baitul Mukarram Mosque area.

On Friday (March 7), Deputy Police Commissioner of the Media and Public Relations Department of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Muhammad Talebur Rahman, confirmed the matter. On Thursday (March 6), they were arrested in a drive in Sector-11 and Sector-12 areas under Uttara West Police Station at around 12:15 am.

Arrested members:

  • Monirul Islam (40)
  • Mohtasin Billah (40)
  • Mahmudul Hasan (21)

Case under the Anti-Terrorism Act

Quoting the CTTC, Talebur Rahman said that based on intelligence information, it is known that active members of Hizbut Tahrir in Uttara Sector-11 and Sector-12 areas are planning to organize a rally called ‘March for Khilafa’. To prevent this activity of the organization, the CTTC conducted a drive and arrested them.

A case has been filed against the arrested people at the Uttara West Police Station under the Anti-Terrorism Act. During interrogation, they admitted that they were active members of Hizb ut Tahrir. This was confirmed by the evidence seized from them.

In addition, the CTTC is continuing its efforts to take legal action against other associates of the arrested, police officials said.
