He claimed that the more tariffs a country imposes on American products, the more America will impose import tariffs on the products of those countries. Trump made it clear once again that he is still adamant in that declaration. He added, “If someone creates any other barrier instead of tariffs, we will do the same for them.”

Trump had also given the same warning during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the US. He had earlier said that the tariff issue had also come up in his meeting with Modi. America wants to further improve bilateral relations with India.

But not in exchange for tariff exemptions! Trump also said that he had given a clear message about America’s tariff policy during his meeting with Modi at the White House. He said, “He came here. I said, whether you impose tariffs or not, I will.” Trump kept that promise.

The Modi government took action after Trump’s tariff warning. In the budget, the Modi government has reduced import duties on a range of products from whiskey to motorbikes imported from America. The Modi government has also agreed in principle to open up the Indian market to American products by signing a trade agreement with America.

Not only that, India’s Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal left for America on Sunday night. According to sources, his visit to the US is to discuss tariff policy with the Trump administration.
